Cat and dog predation on birds: The importance of indirect predation after bird-window collisions

چکیده
Predation of free-living birds by cats (Felis silvestris catus) and dogs (Canis lupus familiaris) is one the main urbanization impacts on avifauna worldwide. In addition to direct predation, these pets capture after window collisions, an unexplored human cause avian mortality. this study we (1) estimated number in Argentina, (2) calculated metrics bird predation dogs, (3) analyzed factors that influence probability capturing birds, (4) annual mortality due pet following bird-window collision events. To end, conducted online survey collect information both indirect collisions. We found more than 68% participants had at least dog or cat, these, 45.3% reported having observed case their household. rough rate collisions could reach approximately 6 million Argentina (range = 1–11 birds). Our results show but also represents a considerable source mortality, which requires further attention pursuit solutions.

1. A questionnaire survey of the numbers of animals brought home by domestic cats Felis catus was conducted between 1st April and 31st August 1997. A total of 14370 prey items were brought home by 986 cats living in 618 households. Mammals made up 69% of the items, birds 24%, amphibians 4%, reptiles 1%, fish <1%, invertebrates 1% and unidentified items 1%. A minimum of 44 species of wild bird, ...
متن کاملBat predation on nocturnally migrating birds.
Bat predation on birds is a very rare phenomenon in nature. Most documented reports of bird-eating bats refer to tropical bats that occasionally capture resting birds. Millions of small birds concentrate and cross over the world's temperate regions during migration, mainly at night, but no nocturnal predators are known to benefit from this enormous food resource. An analysis of 14,000 fecal pel...

I n the months leading up to the 1973 Yom Kippur War, the Egyptian military staged 40 maneuvers on or near the Israeli border. Over time, the Israelis learned that Egyptian activity near the border was not necessarily a threat to respond to, and they ultimately let their guard down, only to be surprised one day when the tanks and troops crossed the border as part of a coordinated invasion (1, 2...
متن کاملObservations on non-additive predation: birds and grasshoppers
Background: Classic predator–prey theory assumes that predatory mortality is additive with other sources of mortality, but predatory mortality can be non-additive. If predators preferentially kill individuals already ‘doomed’ from other mortality causes, then predation can be less than additive. If predators preferentially kill individuals more likely to survive, then predation can be greater t...
متن کاملDirect and indirect effects of predation and predation risk in old-field interaction webs.
Indirect effects emerge when a change in the abundance of one species indirectly affects another by changing the abundances of intermediate species-called density-mediated indirect effects-or they arise when one species modifies how two other species interact-called trait-mediated indirect effects. I report on field experiments that evaluated how grass and herb biomass in old-field interaction ...
